The Motability Scheme Clearly Explained

The Motability scheme was set up to enable disabled people to trade in either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of their Disability Living Allowance or their War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement to fund the purchase of a brand new car, scooter or a powered wheelchair.

This scheme allows disabled people the chance to obtain a new car in an easy and convenient way. Furthermore, the scheme also covers insurance, servicing, breakdown cover and any adaptations - meaning that motoring becomes altogether much more convenient.

There are several ways to fund your new car through the Government-funded Motability Scheme. You can either choose Contract Hire, which means that you can pick a new car of your choice every three years - and all of your servicing, maintenance and breakdown needs are also covered in this package too.

Alternatively, you can use Hire Purchase which means that you will negotiate the actual vehicle cost with your local Motability dealer. With this scheme you will also need to ensure that you will be receiving your allowance for the entire period of your agreement. You will also need to organise your own car insurance, breakdown cover and maintenance. The positive aspect to this finance plan is that you actually get to own your vehicle, as with Contract Hire you are simply 'hiring' the vehicle - so you get to choose the plan that suits you, if you would rather own your vehicle then Contract Hire is the scheme for you.

So, once you decide which finance plan suits you, the next step is to find your local Motability car dealer.
The simplest way to do this is to search Google for your local dealer, i.e. 'Motability Essex' - alternatively you can log onto the actual Motability site and use their dealer search option, which will give you a full list of all the authorised Motability dealers.

Your Motability dealer will help you to choose your new car, discuss any adaptations and help you to fill out the necessary paperwork. They will then assist you through the ordering process and you will then be notified by your car dealer when your vehicle is ready for collection - it's as simple as that!

If you decide on the lease hire agreement you can also nominate up to two drivers - who may be friends or relatives - to drive your car. This flexible feature is good for helping you get around.

So, in all the Motability scheme is an affordable and convenient way to fund a new car!
